If the underlying connections between human beings could be illuminated and viewed, then The Walking Man would be like a spider walking the web of human interaction. Connecting others, helping to more easily sever connection and still maintain the integrity of individual nodes, and yet, never himself staying connected for long. His role is that of a nightwatchman, feeling the strength of the gossamer threads, and merely brushing against connections that already exist, all of which make up humanities social aspect.
He is a weaver, in many regards. His concern is not for his own connections, which are few and far between. And, like a weaver, his only concern is for the strength of the connection that lay so delicately in his grasp at the time being. He knows that in time these will be incorporated into this intricate web, and will gain strength through their surroundings, if they have not already.
Because of this, others who know him well find that he tends to take his personal connections for granted, but he understands their place in the overall web.
He considers himself an outsider, always at the fringe of a conversation or a situation, looking inwards towards the intricacies of group dynamics. He tends to operate more fully in one-on-one situations, but in many cases this is a luxury, and far more often he is never the center of another’s attention. He merely stands by as silent director, helping to nurture and expand the web by his subtle interactions through minor tugging and weaving. His presence, for a large part, goes unnoticed, except by a few rather perceptive individuals.
And with this, he is satisfied, to stand at the edge and merely watch and weave, hoping to strength the web that ultimately supports him, though the connections in the web never realize their importance to him.
