After about an hour of this, I got sick and tired (not just sick, and not just tired either) of listening to this crap. It was starting to get to me, in other words, I wanted to stick ice picks in my ears.
My empathy had kicked in, and the fighting was getting to the point where I simply could not take it anymore.
It was as though my brain was beginning to boil over, and the lid was on too tight. I felt what can only be described as a mental “pop”, and then I said the first thing that came to mind.
“AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!”
Followed by the always effective,
“SHUT UP!!!!!!!”
Amazingly, they did.
And then they started right back up again.
That didn’t go as planned.
I walked off, and just began walking around, staring at the sidewalk. Half an hour later, the little conference of drama queens had mostly dispersed, and John was left sitting on the sidewalk, bawling his eyes out. He still had had no chance to talk to Wendy and try to de-obfuscate the situation.
Instead, he was now going off on the wall, the dirt, a couple of leaves, and a poor defenseless earthworm, that just so happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I sat, on the sidewalk in front of my apartment for two, mind-numbing hours, trying to convince this guy that Wendy was not worth killing himself over. Before you get uptight, he didn’t do anything of the sort, but I still made him promise me that he’d talk to me first before he tried anything.
The next day, Wendy and John finally had a chance to talk in private, away from the collective cabal of relationship crashers. Long story short, they got all their ducks in a row. Julia grabbed her shotgun and found a duckblind. This wasn’t over yet.
Apparently, Julia had resorted to the next best thing, which was “If I can’t have her, neither can he.”
For the next few weeks, she would be dropping subtle hints to John, Wendy, and anybody else who happened by about how they were going to fail miserably for all the world to see.
Again, I remind you, of Julia’s previous “good” judgement in relationships. Oh yeah, she was an expert alright.
