Drama

About this same time, we got another new set of neighbors, a guy I have only come to know as “Popcorn”. He’s a nice, friendly African-American gentlemen, and his girlfriend who lives with him, I’ve had in class a time or two. He’s rather private, but will occassionally come outside to hang with us all on the stairwell that sits between all of our apartments.

Kristen by this point, had found out about Mary and Julia’s relationship, and was a little on the irritated side. Like coarse rotary sander on bare skin irritated. The fireworks hadn’t really started with Kristen and Julia yet, but things were beginning to heat up. They were starting to get on each other’s nerves.

Also about this time, everyone in the complex found out that I’m a computer guy, and suddenly I became the local “Rent-a-nerd”. I suddenly had a lot people interested in my services, yet not so interested in paying me. Well, damn.

Things began to get interesting (as if they hadn’t already) when Julia and Mary broke up. Turns out Mary wanted to go, and I quote, “Strictly Dickly” and Julia basically broke down for a couple of days. By this time, “Wendy”, the new upstair’s neighbor’s less than well-adjusted girlfriend, had moved in and began hanging out with us on the stoop in the evenings when boredom would rule.

Julia remained living with Kristen, and I suppose they resolved their differences, at least enough to keep from murdering each other. About this time, Max started showing up, and hanging off of Julia like tight clothing. Apparently, Julia was interested in Max, but not for anything more than cuddling. You see, Julia was actually bi, not lesbian, and a virgin to boot.

Max, who was married but seperated, had recently gotten out of prison on drug charges, and was interested in doing the things he hadn’t had a chance to do in 18 months, such as buy alcohol, vote, or, more importantly, get laid. Julia had found a real winner here.

Max assured us all that he was clean and had taken a change for the better. His sob story involved the fact that he had had a hard life and just wanted a chance to succeed. He only needed to get back on his feet, settle things with his soon to be ex-wife, figure out where he was headed, and start moving there. However, right now, he simply wanted to get him some boot-ay. As best as I can remember, that’s verbatim.

Things ended up coming to a head with Max when about a week after they began hanging out, Julia approached me to warn me about him.

“Can you do me a favor?”

“Uhh, sure. What’s up?”

“If you see Max around here, don’t open your door. Call the cops.”

“Uhhh, what’s wrong? Is he harrassing you guys?”

“You didn’t hear?”

“Hear… what?”

“The cops are trying to find him for raping that mentally retarded girl from building C.”

“…”

“Yeah. I don’t want him around here anymore…”

“I don’t blame you!”

“Well, there’s that, and I’ve decided to go lez.”

“Ahhh. Swearing off guys?”

“Yup.”

“Again, not sure I blame you after Max.”

If this is a change for the better, I’m glad I didn’t see what he was before. Last I heard, he’s back in prison.

With both Max and Mary out of the picture, Julia turned her attention towards Wendy, John’s new young and highly confused girlfriend.
